Canadian Law Awards: Quebecers rewarded

Awarded by Lexpert, the prizes Canadian Law Awards annually celebrate the best in the profession. They highlight the work of law firms, in-house legal teams and lawyers across the country, as well as their landmark transactions over the past year.

Hundreds of nominations were received from coast to coast. The announcement of the prizes was made during a gala held in person on May 19. Here are the Quebecers who stood out.

Quebec firm of the year

Lavery was awarded the title of Quebec firm of the year. This is a hat-trick for Lavery in this category: it is the third consecutive year that it has won this nomination.

In a press release, the firm believes that “this recognition is a testament to our customer service and the exceptional talent of our lawyers”.

Galileo Partners and Langlois Avocats also received a mention of excellence in this category.

Deal of the Year – Insolvency and Restructuring

Gowling WLG won Deal of the Year – Insolvency and Restructuring. The jury thus underlines the firm’s work in the context of the Groupe Dynamite restructuring operation, under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) and Chapter 15.

Montreal Associates Alexandre Forest and Francois Viau as well as the lawyer Ilias Hmimaswere acting on behalf of several property owners in this case.

In a statement, Gowling WLG notes that “the landlords’ court victory has set a remarkable precedent for all restructuring taking place in the retail sector during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The Montreal office of Norton Rose Fulbright advised Deloitte Restructuring in its capacity as controller in this transaction. The team included Luc Morin, Guillaume Michaud, Noah Zucker and Arad Mojtahedi.

McCarthy Tétrault lawyers were also involved in this transaction.

Prize of excellence

Even if Quebecers did not emerge victorious in all categories, several mentions of excellence were awarded to firms from here.

Novacap’s legal affairs team, led by Bruno Duguayfor example, was selected as a finalist in the Legal Department of the Year category for banks and financial institutions.

Ivanhoé Cambridge’s in-house lawyers also stood out in the Legal Department Innovation and Canadian Law Department of the Year categories, as did Denis Bouliannewinner of excellence in the Head of the legal department of the year category. Francis Lecomteof Airbus Canada Limited Partnership, was at his side.
